Two Clocks, One Network: Engineering for AI Workloads and Post-Quantum Risk

Two structural shifts are reshaping every network architectu2019s mandate in 2026 and neither can be solved with the operating models that brought us here.nThe first is the rise of the AI factory: GPU clusters whose collective-communication patterns generate east-west traffic at densities, burst ratios, and latency tolerances that classical Ethernet was never designed to serve. Lossless behavior, microsecond-scale congestion control, topology-aware scheduling, and continuous fabric tuning are no longer optimizations they are the price of entry. A single congestion event in a training job can stall hundreds of millions of dollars of compute.nThe second is the post-quantum transition. NIST has finalized FIPS 203, 204, and 205. CNSA 2.0 timelines are compressing. u201cHarvest now, decrypt lateru201d makes todayu2019s long-lived sessions tomorrowu2019s exposure. Crypto-agility is a 2026 architectural decision, not a 2030 migration project.
